Clinics

We partner with outstanding professional and educational organizations to provide vital health, dental and legal services to uninsured and impoverished individuals. These programs have evolved from the commitment to social ministry at First Lutheran Church, which has stood in the heart of downtown San Diego since 1888. Below is information on TACO's clinics.

Free Medical & Pharmacy Clinics

Mondays from 5:30 pm
Offered by the University of California, San Diego, School of Family and Preventive Medicine

Through a mutually rewarding partnership with the UCSD Medical School, TACO provides free medical care to anyone who needs it.

Under the direction of Dr. Michelle Johnson, UCSD medical students examine patients in rooms once used for Sunday school at First Lutheran Church. Students of the medical clinic learn to administer a full-service primary care clinic and provide services to an ever-growing group of people lacking health insurance in our city." In addition to serving a community need, the student doctors receive an introduction to their chosen profession.

When necessary, patients are referred to hospitals. Through a variety of grants, TACO and the medical clinic have been able to help people to better access care. People receive care at this clinic every week. Some are homeless; many are working but do not have health insurance.

Free Dental Clinic

Mondays from 5:30 pm
Offered by the Pre-Dental Society, University of California, San Diego

The Free Clinic Project provides a wide variety of dental and medical services. Currently there is a two-month wait to be seen through our dental clinic. Depending on staff availablility, five to ten patients are seen per evening.

The clinics also provide education and training for students. Students gain experience in patient care, public health, community service, education, and administration of care. Students learn about all aspects of clinical operations and participate in health promotion. The FCP serves as a unique educational tool under the guidance of university faculty and community professionals.
